How many tries ?

Postby logscaler on Mon Feb 22, 2010 7:08 pm

I found this link on the Portland geocaching site and it seemed like something to post here.

Nailed it on the first try!
The first GPS I ever used weighed over 4 pounds and was made in Oregon.

What would a brownsbend search be without a few DNF's? I got it on the 4th try.

Geocaching of the future?

No doubt some cachers will want a smiley for their clicking efforts.

Got lucky, first place I looked. Rare in the real world. Who ever put this video together, they are definitely hooked on the sport. That was funny. =D>

Ok, I'll bite. Seems like there should be some way to make selections but nothing appears in Safari. Reload in Firefox and I see the hot spots. Easy find. TNLNSL. Is this a micro or small? I'd call it small because a log sheet rather than a book would leave room for a few items, even a traveler. I should get a smiley because I worked harder at this than many real caches!

Given the popularity of videos and animation I'm surprised that someone hasn't created a true geocaching game. I guess in their fantasy lives people want to blow things up rather than just find them. There are many trip and instructional videos--even a movie--most of them pretty bad. Jeep had a marketing game a few years ago after they stopped releasing travel bugs, but I never played it.

There was a cache that this reminded me of. It was a Swedish cache (archived) that allowed people to find the real deal or visit using a GPS simulator. Very game like. I logged it before I realized the ramifications of armchair caches and went back and changed my find to a note. :)

Geocache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=cd5d30b0-d84d-43d2-90fc-2699df4dbc77

The GPS Simulator: http://web.telia.com/~u32007998/geocache/eng/gpscache_eng.html

Translation from the archived cache is basically as follows:

"The cache is a very well hidden freezer box containing: a logbook, pencil and five small bags of candy. Ask any vehicle and start from small junction: N 57 ° 27,987. E 012 ° 44,600. The cache found in an ancient landscape and the path goes through lovely spruce. The distance is about 1km long. Courier leads you a long way. Do not, however, towards the buildings. Does any cup of coffee and relax on this day in the middle of Anglemark. Also available as a simulator on the web."

There is a card game out called First To Find that looks well done but I know that isn't the type of game you are referring to. I have it but have yet to play it.

I couldn't get the simulator to load fully (uses some sort of Shockwave plugin) but the cache logs--1758 finds, 1842 logs!--are interesting. I logged many virtual and locationless caches in the early days. Sorry I missed this one, looks like fun. I don't see anything inherently wrong with caches that are designed for finding from home. Besides, at some point in the future most travel will probably be done remotely.

That game was one of the prizes in the FTF series competition--won by TBird2LM--I put on 3 years ago. I wonder if they ever played it? They certainly dominated the 10-cache series.
