Must do caches in Central Oregon.

Postby logscaler on Sun Oct 25, 2009 10:00 pm

I want to start a list of must do caches in Central Oregon.

Just off the cuff, how does a 75 mile radius from Post sound for an area?

That is roughly from Maupin to Silver lake and from Tombstone Pass to John Day.

To make it fair, anyone can submit a cache for consideration.

BUT, you have to be willing to REMOVE the cache from the list if enough people have valid reasons for you to do so.

Let's set the bar at 6 negative votes and away it goes. By you or a moderator if need be.

(I know, this places some pressure on the moderators but I think they are going to go cabin fever nuts any time now and need something to do.)

I would like to start off with some of our favorites.

GC64CC - The Hole of Inaccessibility Bonus Cache

GC94DB - INCONCEIVABLE!! (Yea gotta love a pair of caches that almost kill you.)

GC5986 - Hash Rock

GC14FVE - Tomatoes

GC145P5 - Triple 7

GCF975 - Bushmaster (One of the all time classics in Central Oregon. IF you have not found this, your a newbie still.)

I am sure to list more before long to add to the list.

I would like to have added the "Post Office" cache in the Badlands but seeing as that style is no longer valid, it would be an unfair comparison. Also another all time Central Oregon classic and if you have not found it, your a Newbie.

Good thought although I'm not surprised with the lack of responses. I've proposed lists a couple of times and gotten nowhere. Our best bet may be to publish our personal lists and compare notes.

There are so many good caches buried in the micro-spew that is hard to pick just a few, but here is a list of active caches that I recommend. I'm sure there are many other worthy ones. Just scenic locations alone could be a long list.

Urban:
Just Bluffing by GeoKnievel (GCVM2Y)
Orienteering 101 by geobaby, JFrank, and EagleI (GCHNJ7, needs maintenance which could drop it off the list)
Wagons Ho! Bend's First Intersection by Rope Stretcher (GCWPF4)

Hiking:
Badlands Post Office by Lava Louie (GC91AA)
Lookout Mountain by Chief Paulina (GCGB44)
Tam McArthur by Chief Paulina (GC7A97)

Scenic:
Almost 8000 by oregonature (GC82A7)
Journey Through Time: Painted Hills Unit by Zzzoey & illDRIVEuNav (GCD080)
Littlerock by PMOGUY (GC2B2)

Adventure:
Bushmaster by Moondog3 (GCF975)
Crooked River Canyons: North Fork by Chief Paulina (GCC37D)
The Adventures of W. Smith (Light in the darkness) by Anklebiters (GCKH5E)

Physical challenge:
Can't Believe I Was Up There by elkjim (GC1QPDR and 2 others)
Deep Lava Exploration by Team Zissou Interns (GC112MR)
Pine Mountain Ridge Runner by logscaler & Red (GCG4KJ)
TZI Wedding March by Team Zissou Interns (GCXK3C)

Multi-cache:
Cache-O and Cache-O2 by bigeddy (GCP5P5 and GC14N2M)
Hills and Dales by BluebirdHal (GC10TVC)
Trail to Flat Iron by logscaler & Red (GCDC53)

Puzzle:
Deschutes Treasure: Needle in a haystack by Ezlife (GC1JD74, also great example of what NOT to do on public land; needs maintenance, too)
Our Blue Planet--Part I. The Stacks by Kestrel Ridge (GC11RGR)
Puzzles with a View by ItOKurt2Me (GCJAT2)
Sage Rat Adventures by Putter&Sassy (GC1R0R3, Whereigo)

Night:
Area 51 - The Night Shift by bigeddy (GCYEER)
Cougar Eyes---A nighttime geocache by Geobaby, Whoisbeau & The Gang (GCGNBD)
Where's Red II by logscaler & Red (GCNJBE)

Water:
ISLET 3 by BAD DOGS (GC1EQAM)
Port Hosmer by Team Zissou Interns (GCPR8J)
Rick's Beach by Rope Stretcher (GC1FCPV)

Camouflage:

Yea, I agree with the idea that no one will add to the list for the most part but I have to try at least. 36 views and 1 response. About normal I guess.

Reading through your list, I see some that sound interesting (not the puzzle ones) that i will try and get to sometime this spring during breakup when I have more free time on my hands.

Our forums on the wet side have also gone quiet. Most of the participants have moved to Facebook. I won't go there, so I have to depend on my wife to let me know when something's going on.

Thanks klossner for reminding me to hit those forums.

I had nothing to add but it was still worth while to revisit.

I agree with the comment that when something interesting happens, we will all pop up like Prairie dogs to check it out.

Some of the "favorite caches" on the PDX site were archived long ago. Lists like that are not very useful unless kept up to date.

I see the attraction of keeping track of all your friends in one place on Facebook--now, if I just had some friends! :-k Of course, the popular networking sites replace coherent discussions with an endless string of sound bites, random diversions and stuff you don't really want to know about your friends. Apparently, that's what most people want because traditional forums like this one are rapidly dying.

I recently started a Facebook page, mostly to keep up with my nursing school class, but it's rather silly. I've had to "turn off" a whole bunch of "friends" because I found that I don't really care about the minutiae of their lives and their whiny complaints. I do enjoy the pictures though!

I like the favorites lists made by other cachers, helps me narrow down my choices. I haven't done a lot out there, but I'd like to add one of my favorites:

Nature In Balance

I'd like to second Tam MacArthur Rim and The Hole of Inaccessibility

Further Up Dachutes is also a favorite. I think of it as Central Oregon, but I guess it's outside your circle.

This Saturday, I think I'm going to go search for an elusive mountain goat in WA, might get a smiley too!

Let me guess, your not talking about drawing a Goat tag for hunting are you.

I had hoped to take Red on a hike to Crack of the Gods this past summer but never made it. Plans. Bah Humbug. Isn't there an old joke about if you wanna make God laugh, tell Him your plans?

I think I will have to make a Bookmark Favorites list one of these days but after a while, it gets kinda hard picking one cache over another.

I hope to get back out this weekend and find some more as we really enjoyed last weekend. Kinda like old times for old timers trying for old school caches.

Maybe a Bonfire event should be held. I will talk with Red and get her advice.

Facebook page eh? You have gone to the darkside CFM! I am with Klossner...not gonna do one... It does help explain the decline of this type of site though. Too bad. :( As far as "must do" caches, I'm afraid my list would not be worth much as the caches I do/place are far from the mainstream. And keeping a list current is something I am not willing to devote energy to. If someone is interested in what type of caches I like they can go look at my bio in GC.com. 8)
A campfire event might be interesting. I will be looking for your ideas on this Logscaler.
FWIW... Tam MacArthur Rim and The Hole of Inaccessibility are awesome caches :!:
I am off to do CFM's Hager Mt. cache today (Lookout below
GC17JMG)...checking it out for my 4 day winter trek to stay in the lookout at the last days of January 2010
http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/recreation/rent ... t-lo.shtml Hey, how about an event cache for winter Snowshoe/Skiers on Saturday January January 30th? Anyone interested? I will be there!

Thanks for the 'must do' list. This will be the list that I look at when planning a caching trip. Looks like a lot of good ones.

I promise to put my own list on here soon.

I did Bushmaster, but I'm fairly sure I'm still a newbie.
